‘Three of Hearts’

You can pay all the lip service you want to here in Will & Grace Nation to the increasingly vague definition of “family” that America tolerates and even celebrates. But how exactly would some of the odder variations of family unit work?

Three of Hearts: A Postmodern Family is about a gay couple who invite a woman into their lives, supposedly to love, cherish and share, and how that might work out. Or not.

The Sam-Stephen-Samantha threesome live together, love together and work together. We see how their families cope with the arrangement, and the cachet that comes with being out on the cutting-edge of social change in tres hip Manhattan.

But is it working, or are we looking at three people in denial over what’s really going on? It takes a pregnancy to get at the truth.

Susan Kaplan devoted years to making this revealing and fiercely honest film, a movie that follows this household through years of bliss, and years beyond that.

It’s movie-making as a psychology project, with real people playing the guinea pigs exploring dangerous new territory. And it’s very good.
